While the new year has come and we’re already over the hump of the first week of 2026, some new laws have taken effect in the state of Virginia that D.C. area residents might not realize are impacting them!
Here are some of the new laws in the state of Virginia that you should know about:
What new laws are active in Virginia as of January 1st, 2026?
- Minimum Wage Increase
The state of Virginia has decided to raise its minimum wage from the former pay of $12.41 per hour to a new total of $12.77 per hour.
While the change may not appear significant at a glance with only increasing by 36 cents, it’s certainly a welcome increase among the people of Virginia, who seem to have shared a generally positive outlook on the change – it translates to an additional $14.40 every week, which is roughly enough to cover the cost of lunch out or for groceries for a nice homecooked meal.
- Social Media Limits for Minors
One of the most notable new laws requires social media platforms to verify the age of users and limit the usage of users under the age of 16 to only one hour of access per day, unless a verified parent sets a different usage limit.
- Expanded Healthcare Coverage Requirements
This new law will require insurance to fully cover breast and prostate cancer screenings, with no cost-sharing when the screenings are ordered by a physician.
- Enhanced Baby Food Safety Standards
Labelled as ‘The Baby Food Protection Act’, this new law will require all baby food manufacturers to test for toxic heavy metals and disclose the results of those tests.

- Telemarketing Text Privacy
This new law will allow recipients of unwanted texts the option of opting out of receiving any marketing text messages by replying “Stop / Unsubscribe”, which will legally require companies to honor your request and place you on a no-contact list for a duration of 10 years.
