Looking for a unique summer night out that’s worth the short drive from Washington, D.C.?
A magical Wizard of Oz-themed drone light show is set to light up the sky in Frederick, Maryland, on Saturday, August 22nd, offering an experience unlike a traditional fireworks display.
The event will take place at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium as part of a special Frederick Keys game-day celebration, blending baseball, family entertainment and cutting-edge drone technology into one memorable evening.
Featuring approximately 500 synchronized drones, the 45-minute aerial production tells the story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, bringing Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion to life high above the ballpark.
When and where is the Wizard of Oz drone show taking place?
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Drone Light Show will be held on Saturday, August 22, at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Maryland—roughly an hour’s drive from Washington, D.C.
The evening is being hosted by the Frederick Keys, the High-A affiliate of MLB’s Baltimore Orioles, and is billed as the first long-form drone show in the stadium’s history.
Instead of a brief postgame display, fans can expect a fully choreographed 45-minute storytelling experience that follows Dorothy’s journey from Kansas to the magical Land of Oz.
The drones are scheduled to take flight at approximately 8:45 pm, after an evening of themed entertainment inside the ballpark.
A rain date of Sunday, August 23 has also been scheduled if needed.

What can visitors expect during Wizard of Oz night?
The fun begins well before the drones take to the sky.
Gates open at 7 pm, giving guests plenty of time to enjoy Wizard of Oz-themed entertainment throughout the stadium.
Visitors can look forward to:
- Roaming Wizard of Oz characters
- Themed photo opportunities
- A DJ dance party
- Specialty food and drinks
- Additional family-friendly surprises throughout the evening
One feature that may appeal to families is that drone shows provide a quieter alternative to traditional fireworks.
Without the loud explosions, they’re often a more comfortable option for young children, pets nearby, and guests who are sensitive to loud noises while still delivering an impressive visual spectacle.

How much does it cost and how can you get tickets?
