While the U.S.’s railroad and passenger train system is still quite far from meeting the standards set in other nations around the world, like the interconnected train routes across Europe, or the highly efficient and fast train travel of Japan, progress is being made right now to ensure we get the train travel we deserve!
Just this past week, Amtrak broke ground on two major modernization projects at key stations along the East Coast, collectively worth over a billion dollars.
The two stations receiving these multi-million-dollar modernizations are Washington, D.C.’s Ivy City Yard and Boston’s Southhampton Yard.

What is Amtrak’s modernization project in Washington, D.C.?
The $700 million Amtrak modernization project, which has received financial support from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Federal Railroad Administration, the Maryland Department of Transportation, and the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), involves the construction of a new maintenance facility for Amtrak, the Ivy City Rail Yard, located in the District.
Expected to be completed by 2030, the maintenance facility will be opened in phases to support the implementation of the new state-of-the-art Airo trains.
The Airo trains, which just began launching this year, are expected to be completely implemented on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor route by 2027.

How is this Amtrak project going to impact Washingtonians?
The modernized Ivy City Rail Yard will serve as a crucial maintenance hub for Amtrak trains along the East Coast, transforming the customer experience, improving reliability, and enabling more efficient maintenance practices.
Specifically, this rail yard will play a key role in the launch and sustained use of Amtrak’s new Airo trains, ultimately benefiting train travelers from the District all the way to Boston!
The exact role of the maintenance yard will be:
- Daily safety inspections
- Routine services and maintenance
- Cleaning procedures
All in, the new facility will be 860 feet long and be over 55,000 square feet, complete with five Maintenance & Inspection tracks and four Service & Cleaning tracks.
