While the former headquarters of the well known think tank, Urban Institute, sits empty awaiting to be converted into residential real estate, D.C. artists taken up a “residency” in the empty office space creating a free to visit interactive art experience for Washingtonians to enjoy! The experience, called Artomatic, draws some of the most notable and up-and-coming artists from around the DMV area giving them an opportunity to showcase their art.
According to Artomatic itself, the event is “an open-entry creative art showcase of visual art, music, film, performance, poetry and fashion”, and local artists that are interested in participating can easily register on Artomatic’s website. Space for new artists is only available on a first-come, first-served basis, but Artomatic claims it can accommodate over 1,400 registered artists in the office space where they are hosting this event!

Artomatic is free to attend for all those that are interested in attending, costs associated with hosting the event are covered by the artists’ registration fees, which means that the only thing you will pay for is any art you decide to purchase (directly from the artist) during your visit. The event is located at 2100 M St. NW and will run from March 8th until April 28th!
This is an event that been held on-and-off for the past 25 years, often at various locations but always maintaining the mantra of “by artists, for artists and art lovers”, but this being the 25th year since its launch makes it a special.

What to expect when you visit Artomatic
Each day Artomatic will be hosting various workshops, networking sessions, and other unique sessions that range in topics from drawing, to movie making, to DJing bringing together art enthusiasts from all around the DMV. If you take the time to explore what interests you, then you just may find your next passion!
In addition to these sessions, there are also specific art markets open every weekend on the third floor of the office space turned art exhibit. These markets feature a wide variety of hand crafted items including pottery, clothing, jewelry, and more! Those in the market to purchase any of the art on display at the venue will be able to purchase the artwork directly from the artist but the pieces will remain on display until April 28th, when Artomatic concludes, after this you’ll be able to claim your purchased art and display it proudly as you please wherever you please!
