No surprise, life in Washington, D.C. is quite expensive, especially since DC was recently measured to have one of the highest costs of living globally.
That being said if you plan to build both a life and a family in the D.C. area, it seems inevitable that many Washingtonians venture out to the surrounding area where it is cheaper to buy a house and avoid the daily expenses of the city.
While this is far from a new phenomenon, it’s something that happens in just about every major city, the winning combination of quality of life, distance to a major city, and its incredibly abundant ‘arts & entertainment’ has earned Silver Spring, Maryland the #1 spot as best place to live for families in America!
Why is Silver Spring, Maryland the best place for families to live in America?
Just last year, Silver Spring was ranked #3 on Fortune Magazine’s ranking – this year, it jumped to the top spot!
According to the ranking, Silver Spring stood out because of several factors, chiefly its bustling Arts & Entertainment District, and the 150+ restaurants that the downtown area calls home.
To add to their point they also broke down the rich diversity of the town, claiming that Silver Spring acts as a small-scale ‘melting pot’ similar to what you might find in most major cities, while at the same time maintaining its charm and friendliness.

One of the things that the ranking mentioned specifically was seeing independent films at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, something we’ll be hoping to do ourselves sometime soon since it sounds like a good time!
