The Michelin Guide seemingly ruffled a few feathers with its 2025 review of the Washington, D.C. food scene, granting no new stars for the first time since the guide came to the D.C. area and stripping the D.C. area’s only 3-star restaurant of its third star…
We know Michelin doesn’t hand out praise lightly, so it means that much more that this D.C. spot was just credited for having one of the best sandwiches on the continent!
The honor of the inclusion should not be overlooked; only seven sandwiches on the entire continent managed to earn a spot on Michelin’s list…
The list of seven sandwiches, which were not ranked in any particular order, is as follows:
- The Campechano Torta served at La89 in Mexico City
- The Cheesesteak served at Dalessandro’s in Philadelphia
- The Cheesesteak served at Fred’s Meat & Bread in Atlanta
- The Italiano served at Lardon in Chicago
- The Muffaletta served at Cochon Butcher in New Orleans
- The Pambazo de Carnitas served at La Diabla Pozole y Mezcal in Denver
- The Lamb Pita served at Yellow in Washington, D.C.

What makes Yellow’s Lamb Pita one of North America’s best sandwiches?
Owned by James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Rafidi, Yellow earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction back in 2023.
Since then, the restaurant has not only retained its Bib Gourmand title but has developed into one of the District’s top dining destinations for an elevated casual culinary experience, offering big Levantine flavors without the fuss or formality of fine dining.
Consisting of a house-made pita, beautifully tender lamb shoulder, smoked peppers, feta, and a creamy garlicky sauce called toum.
The Michelin inspectors’ review of their Lamb Pita dish could be summarized as “excellent”, one of the very first words they used to describe the sandwich!
