Washingtonians have been through the wringer this winter…
Between the significant snowfall and the historic cold streak that turned the District into an ice cube for about a month straight, it doesn’t feel wrong to say we are all looking for signs of spring!
Now, with that in mind, Washingtonians can revel in the fact that one of the best first signs of the end of winter is upon us: the first 6 pm sunset in D.C. of 2026!
When is the District’s first 6 pm sunset of the year?
The very first 6 pm sunset of the year will be this weekend, on Sunday, March 1st!
Currently, the forecast for Sunday shows a high of 57 degrees and a low of 30, meaning that it will be relatively warm. Unfortunately, the forecast also calls for heavy cloud cover throughout the day, which could make it impossible for Washingtonians to see or enjoy the sunset.

Things to do this weekend around D.C., now that the days are getting longer
There are some amazing things to do around the District when the days get longer, and the weather starts to warm up around this time of year!
Here are a few of our favorite things that you can do over the weekends now that the days are going to get longer:
- Check out the annual joint Orchid exhibit between the U.S. Botanic Garden and the Smithsonian’s Garden.
- Take a day trip outside the District to visit one of the most walkable main streets in the nation.
- Try out one of the amazing hiking trails around the D.C. area.
- Head to one of the District’s premier spots to see the sunset.
- Plan a picnic with friends at Hains Point
