While the first snowfall of the season for the DC Area came a few months ago, all the way back in November, the first snowfall of 2025 seems to be right around the corner with ‘Snow Squalls’ expected to hit the District later this weekend!
When is it going to snow around DC?
The District’s first snowstorm of the year is expected this weekend.
Flurries are expected to start around Sunday night across the region and could quickly stick and pile up due to freezing temperatures over the weekend.
The exact times when the snowfall will start, peak, and conclude will vary across the DMV Area, but experts stated snow could start falling as early as 6:00 pm around DC and continue through the night into Monday morning.
How much will it snow around DC?
While the snow forecasts do not seem to suggest an incredibly high volume of snowfall, due to the region’s below-freezing temperatures leading up to the snowstorm, the snow should begin to stick and pile up almost instantly.
These ideal conditions mean that any initial snowfall which would typically melt upon contact with the ground will instead ‘catch’ on the ground, making it much easier for the forthcoming snow to stick and build up.
The amount of snow expected to pile up across the region varies greatly, but for the DC Area, the rough estimate is around 4 to 8 inches of snow by Monday morning.
What is a snow squall?
A ‘snow squall’ roughly equates to a ‘mini blizzard’ which means brief but intense periods of snowfall that could start, peak, and conclude, within as little as 30 minutes.
Snow squalls can be particularly hazardous for travelers as intense snowfall greatly impacts visibility and road conditions.
If you know of an upcoming snow squall, such as the snowstorm expected to hit the DC Area this Sunday night, it is best to avoid driving unless necessary.
Will schools be closed on Monday?
As you may imagine, this will be decided by Monday morning once the extent of the snowfall can be assessed to ensure road conditions are safe enough for students to return to school.
According to weather experts, there is a potential for a ‘snow day’ this upcoming Monday, but that will not be confirmed until an official decision is made by Monday morning.
