Residents from the DMV area who are a little exhausted from the high cost of living as well as the hustle and bustle of life around D.C. might be interested to hear that Cumberland, MD is now offering a relocation packager for up to $20,000 to anyone willing to relocate to the city of Cumberland!
Cumberland is a small city in northern Maryland just over two hours away from D.C. that sits right along the borders of Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania!
How to get $20,000 by moving to Cumberland, Maryland
The local government of Cumberland has introduced a new trial pilot program that is offering to cover the relocation costs for families that have been accepted by the program’s application costs for up to $20,000!
The program does have strict eligibility requirements including:
- A 100% full-time remote job, existing role within the general area surrounding the Cumberland area, proof of self-employment, or clear intent to begin a new role nearby immediately following relocation.
- Must relocate to within the Cumberland city limits from outside of Allegany County.
- Be willing and able to move within six months of approval from the application process.
- Participate in an interview process with local officials such as city staff, the mayor, or local city council members.
- Be 18+ years old and legally eligible to work in the United States (US citizen or have permanent resident status).
What’s the catch?
Cumberland is a growing city, which means it is on its way to establishing itself as a sought-after place to live, so while this is undoubtedly an exciting opportunity to move to a new community and play a crucial role in its development, it is worth knowing what you’re signing up beyond the simple $20,000 of relocation cash.
Here are two of the limitations outlined in the deal:
- You must live in the new home in Cumberland purchased with the relocation cash as your primary residence for at least five years.
If you move out or establish a primary residence elsewhere before the five-year period ends, you will be required to pay back the city of Cumberland for the full amount of the funding provided in your initial relocation - Any newly constructed home purchased with the relocation funds must not exceed $150,000 in value.
- Anyone convicted of a felony or crime will be automatically rejected from the application process.
- The offer of up to $20,000 for relocation consists of $10,000 cash for relocating + up to $10,000 (dollar-for-dollar match) for approved renovations to an existing home, or for a downpayment on a newly constructed home in Cumberland.
