National Museum of African American History and Culture Juneteenth Community Day
One of the largest Juneteenth observances in the city will take place at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture on Friday, June 19th.
The museum’s free Community Day will honor Opal Lee, often called the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” through storytelling, performances, workshops, family activities, and educational programming.
Registration is required, and visitors can reserve tickets through the museum’s website.
Additionally, the museum will host a Juneteenth Trunk Show featuring local DMV artisans and vendors throughout the day.
Juneteenth at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum
The Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum will host a neighborhood-style Juneteenth celebration on June 19th and June 20th featuring live music, spoken-word performances, cooking demonstrations, youth activities, gardening programs, and community conversations.
The free event is designed to bring together residents and visitors for a day of culture, learning, and celebration, with activities continuing into the evening.
Ward 7 Juneteenth Parade and Opal’s Walk for Freedom
For those looking to participate in a community tradition, the Ward 7 Juneteenth Parade and Opal’s Walk for Freedom will take place on Friday, June 19th, beginning at 10 am.
The event starts near Washington Heights Baptist Church and proceeds through the Fort Dupont area before concluding in Fort Dupont Park.
The parade serves as both a celebration and a reflection on the ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality. Attendance is free.
A Juneteenth Joint at The Wharf
The Wharf will host A Juneteenth Joint on Friday, June 19th, bringing together live music, local food vendors, Black-owned businesses, community organizations, art installations, and family-friendly activities.
Running from noon until 6 pm, the waterfront celebration is free to attend and offers one of the city’s largest outdoor Juneteenth gatherings.
Juneteenth on U Street
Washington’s historic U Street corridor—often referred to as “Black Broadway”—will once again host a Juneteenth celebration on Thursday, June 18th, at Harrison Park.
The free event will feature live Go-Go music, DJs, food vendors, community organizations, and activities celebrating D.C.’s rich Black cultural heritage.
Organizers describe it as a neighborhood-wide gathering designed to showcase local culture and community pride.
