The Library of Congress is bringing back one of Washington, D.C.’s most popular summer traditions with its annual “Movies on the Lawn” series.
Held on the iconic grounds of Capitol Hill, the free event invites locals and visitors alike to unwind with classic films as the sun sets.
In honor of the nation’s semiquincentennial, this year’s lineup once again draws from the National Film Registry, highlighting movies deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.
From family favorites to timeless classics, the series offers a uniquely cinematic way to experience one of the nation’s most historic institutions.

When and where are the movies being held — and what’s playing this summer?
The Library of Congress’s annual Movies on the Lawn series returns this summer with free outdoor screenings on the southeast lawn of the Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C.
The series begins on July 9 and runs every Thursday through Aug. 6, with an additional rain date on Aug. 13 in case of bad weather.
Each event includes a 7 p.m. pre-show performance or encore presentation, followed by the movie screening at sundown.

- 7 p.m. performance: Live music from Naptown Brass Band
- July 16: Rocky (1976)
- 7 p.m. performance: Encore recording of Yilian Cañizares’ spring 2026 Library performance
- July 23: Back to the Future (1985)
- 7 p.m. performance: Encore recording of Christian McBride’s spring 2026 Library performance
- July 30: A League of Their Own (1992)
- 7 p.m. performance: Live performance from Matthew Van Hoose, organist for the Washington Nationals
- Aug. 6: Apollo 13 (1995)
- 7 p.m. performance: Encore audio recording of Stanley Clarke’s spring 2026 Library performance
- Aug. 13: Rain date (if needed)
Visitors are encouraged to arrive early with blankets, lawn chairs, and snacks to grab a good spot and enjoy the full evening before the film begins.

Do you need tickets?
No — tickets are not required for “Movies on the Lawn,” making it one of the most accessible summer events in Washington, D.C.
The screenings are completely free and open to the public, with space available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and their own snacks or drinks to enjoy a relaxed, picnic-style movie night.
Because of its popularity, arriving early is recommended if you want a prime viewing spot on the lawn.
