General Manager and CEO of WMATA, Randy Clarke, shared some exciting news earlier this month. A new “Tap. Ride. Go.” payment system has been announced, and now, it is officially in action. Riders can tap a credit, debit, or mobile wallet card on any faregate, making it easier than ever to pay for rides.
While this development may not seem as drastic for those who keep their SmarTrip cards on their smartphones, we imagine many will take advantage of the new feature. After all, the new “Tap. Ride. Go.” payment system eliminates the need to reload your card.
This change is particularly welcome for those visiting D.C., as they will not need to purchase a SmarTrip card at a fare vending machine.
When will the “Tap. Ride. Go.” payment system go into effect?
As of Wednesday, May 28, passengers can now tap their credit or debit cards on Metrorail. The feature has conveniently been introduced before the last weekend of WorldPride, simplifying Metro accessibility for the many visitors traveling to D.C. for the parade.
Can I still use my SmarTrip card?
Yes! Currently, there do not appear to be any plans to phase out SmarTrip cards. Whether you have a fun, limited-edition card or are eager to contribute to your annual “Metro Rewind,” you are welcome to use your current card.
Does this feature extend to buses and parking facilities?
Not yet – while the Metrorail element of “Tap. Ride. Go” is now functional, the feature will not expand to Metrobus and parking facilities until a later date.
