We’re nearly there, DC! Just 50 days until summer! While the weather might not be catching up with the vibe shift this week (it’s going to be raining!) the sunset sure is. May is here, and that means this is the first full month of 2025 with 8pm sunsets!
Every time these later sunsets come around, we can’t help but start to dream of warm nights and ice cold beer at Red Derby’s rooftop, late night summer movies along the Potomac, and ice cream dates. While we still have some time to wait before summer, these later sunsets will help us get started on our summer bucket list early.
During April, we saw the sunset slowly inching towards 8pm, but we didn’t get our first 8pm sunset on the very last day of April, making way for a month-filled with 8pm sunsets.
As May progresses, sunsets will start to progressively get later and later with the midpoint of the month seeing an 8:14pm sunset all the way until May 31st, where the sun doesn’t set until 8:31pm! This is all leading up to the latest sunset of the year, 8:37pm, which starts on June 22nd, a day after the June solstice, and starts to creep back down on July 3rd, right before Independence Day. Make sure to get outdoors those days if weather permits.
In the upcoming summer months, keep an eye out for interesting celestial events like June 11th’s Strawberry Moon and August’s Perseid meteor showers.
What are you planning to do before the sun sets today?
