Including places to cut your own tree!
It’s the most wonderful time of the year yet again and while holidays may be looking a bit different this year, there’s nothing quite like a freshly-cut Christmas tree and the scent of pine to help make things a bit easier. While cases continue on the rise here in the District, the National Christmas Tree Association has issued new guidelines to keep Christmas tree hunting safe during the pandemic. We’ve mapped out a few places where you can find your perfect Christmas tree and even cut it down yourself for an awesome holiday-themed outing!
Pretty much DC Christmas Tree royalty, Dan & Bryan Trees has been around for over half a century and has provided trees for the likes of senator Edward Kennedy and first lady Barbara Bush, and was also in charge of providing the White House Christmas tree back in 2009. Formerly known as Sundback Trees, the farm specializes in Douglas and Fraser Firs and has trees of all shapes and sizes. Their DC location has freshly cut trees but if you’d like to cut your own make sure to head on out to their Shepherdstown Farm!
When: Dan & Bryan Trees’s DC location opens from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
Where: 3810 Massachusetts Ave NW.
Pick up a freshly-cut tree at Olde City Farm along with any other luscious greenery you can think of! The center is hosting special Christmas tree hours starting this Black Friday on November 27.
When: Monday through Friday, noon through 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: 925 Rhode Island Ave NW.
This Alexandria garden has plenty of freshly-cut trees to go around, not to mention its wide variety of holiday foliage, the perfect add on to your Christmas décor.
When: Greenstreet Garden opens daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: 1721 W Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA.
At this Maryland farm, you’ll not only find gorgeous trees ready to take come but also plenty of handmade wreaths and fresh garlands to deck out your home. Modlins’ also offers freshly made hot cocoa, cider and coffee so you can warm up after a day of Christmas tree hunting!
When: Modlins’ Tree Farm opens daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: 5910 Little Road, Lothian, MD.
If you’re looking for affordable-yet-beautiful trees, Clemsonville Farm sells trees starting at $30. Plus, they’re home to a giant, 50-foot-tall “everlasting” Christmas tree made entirely out of limestone rock!
Due to COVID-19, you’ll only be able to cut your own tree at Moose Apple Farm only if you pre-tagged it, starting December 3. However, the farm still has a wide selection of freshly-cut trees at your disposal and is also offering curbside pick-up to make things run smoothly and safely.

Located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, at Valley Star Farms you’ll get to pick out cut down your own tree while enjoying breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Plus you can support our troops with your visit since they encourage donations to the Christmas Spirit Foundation). Oh and don’t forget to check out the stunning Luray Caverns before heading over to the farm, they’re just a stone’s throw away!
When: Open from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends.
