1. Snowshoe
Snowshoe is fairly close to D.C. at 4 hours and is one of the largest snow resorts in the area. Since it’s in a remote area, you’ll have to stay in one of their gorgeous lodges, so you’ll want to head here if you’re into a weekend getaway. This season, they’ll be celebrating their 50th anniversary from Dec. 19th to Dec. 22nd with some special deals. Snowshoe has three unique areas, 60+ trails and glades, four terrain parks, night skiing and activities like snowmobiling, sledding, a 3-course backcountry dining experience, and more.

2. Catskills
If you want the ultimate skiing experience, then there’s no place better on the East Coast than the Catskills. They’ve got a little of everything, which is probably why the area has brought in celebrities and artists from around the world to experience its slopes. From huge resorts (our favorites are Belleayre and Hunter) to amazing farm-to-table dining and four distinct sub-regions, there’s a whole world out there to explore if you’re a winter adventurer. Mount Tremper, New York
3. Timberline
Coming in at only 3 hours, Timberline is touted by locals as a great resort with more lodges, great snow, and better prices. Timberline has opened for the snow season, reporting peak conditions. One day fees are $95 with access to the resort any day during the season or $699 for a season pass. Get more information here.

4. Whitetail Resort
Whitetail, located in Pennsylvania, is open for the season starting December 20th. They’ve got a list of activities like snow tubing and snowmobiling, classes for kids to learn how to ski, and night skiing. Get more information on their website.

5. Canaan Valley
Three hours from Pittsburg and D.C., Canaan Valley has the highest mountain east of the Rockies. January typically sees up to 32″ of snow, making it the ultimate getaway this winter near D.C. Skiers and snowboarders will be able to choose between different beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs, plus there’s beautiful lodging to enjoy if you make a weekend out of it.
